About us

Power Cut Prepper is the culmination of over 30 years of interest in preparing for power cuts. It all started at the age of 9, when I created an emergency light from an old car battery, relay, charger and car headlamp. Preparations progressed at 14 years to wiring plug in commercial emergency lights around the home, identical to the bulkhead light we now offer. Whenever there was a power cut in the street, there was always a sense of satisfaction when neighbours called to check why we were unaffected.

Owning my own home allowed me to properly indulge my interest, which mushroomed by the second house! Each room now has a ceiling mounted emergency light, with a range of torches in the emergency cupboard. A generator back-up system provides power to the house via a changeover switch, with a mains inverter powering the gas heating system from a car battery when the generator is not required.

Power Cut Prepper is part of Tough Leads Ltd. By coincidence, the technical team at Tough Leads all have an interest in home back up preparations. Power Cut Prepper was born following a conversation in our workshop about the current threat of power cuts in the UK this winter. Upon reviewing the prepping advice online, it became clear that it was rather basic and focused purely on how to survive during a power cut, not on the simple steps that can be taken to prepare for one. Using our combined expertise, we developed the UK's definitive guide to preparing for a power cut.

Unlike most online stores, we don't just sell products; we thoroughly evaluate every single one. For our range of torches, we ran tests using a light meter to assess the light output over the course of the unit's battery life.

Working in a range of senior positions for 999 emergency services over the past 20 years, has taught me the importance of planning for emergencies and being prepared for the unexpected. Whatever the likelihood of power cuts this winter, it makes sense to take simple steps now, to ensure the safety of your family and to help life continue as close to normality as possible, if they do occur.

I hope you find our advice guides and range of carefully selected products useful to prepare your own home.
